ATHEISM IS NOT A PROOF THAT GOD DOES NOT EXIST. INSTEAD IT IS THE ASSERTION THAT THEISM DOES NOT PROVIDE AN ADEQUATE PROOF OF THE EXISTENCE OF GOD

Belief in god is unsubstantiated emotional feelings which are as subjective to each individual as one's choice of pizza toppings. There is ZERO empirical evidence for a god, any god, not just your god. ZERO. Where is this 'god' separate from your emotions? Nowhere. Your 'god' has not reality apart from your internal flood of thoughts and peptides. No objective reality. Thats what faith is. A fragile candle adults use to keep away the boogeyman of old age, death and egoic extinction. Let fear go.

Religion is fear based and purpose driven. What purpose? Binding the tribe together. Why? Evolutionary survival. A strong tribe allows more opportunities for members to pass on their genes. Religion is one of the 'glues' of tribal strength.

Religion is an existential anaesthetic. It helps us cope with the suffering in life, especially death, and brings meaning to many of our jobs, relationships and sorrows. Thats why atheism is only for the mentally strong, for those who can face the absurdities of life and not end it all. Those who can carve their own meaning out of lifes cruel hand, to love, work and laugh at the fate awaiting us as we chase smoke rings.

There is zero evidence that prayer performs any function except as a passive behaviour designed to relieve you of the burden of helplessness over situations that normally lie outside of your control, and creates the illusory sense that a Super-Parent is aware of and concerned over your personal angst, thereby leaving you feel heard and held by something greater than the situation at hand. It is a psychological analgesic that both dupes our perceptions and the gnawing tendency to take action in the face of lifes unpredictability, and leaves one feeling like an active shareholder in lifes uncertain drama. They become participants in an imaginary Cosmic plan which they cannot compass or understand, but remain convinced of its perceived benefit, purpose and meaning.

Some quotes by Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900):

A casual stroll through the lunatic asylum shows that faith does not prove anything.

After coming into contact with a religious man I always feel I must wash my hands.

Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.

No price is too high to pay for the privilege of owning yourself.

Distrust all in whom the impulse to punish is powerful!

Insanity in individuals is something rare - but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule.

Ah, women. They make the highs higher and the lows more frequent.

Every church is a stone on the grave of a god-man: it does not want him to rise up again under any circumstances.

In Christianity neither morality nor religion come into contact with reality at any point.

Other Quotes:
Geertz said Religion is a system of symbols which acts to establish powerful, persuasive, and long-lasting moods and motivations in men by formulating conceptions of a general order of existence and clothing these conceptions with such an aura of factuality that the moods and motivations seem uniquely realistic

Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge: it is those who know little, and not those who know much, who so positively assert that this or that problem will never be solved by science. Charles Darwin

To assert that the earth revolves around the sun is as erroneous as to claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin.
Cardinal Robert Bellarmine, Trial of Galileo, 1615

Truth in matters of religion is simply the opinion that has survived. Oscar Wilde

For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring. Carl Sagan

'The argument that the literal story of Genesis can qualify as science collapses on three major grounds: the creationists' need to invoke miracles in order to compress the events of the earth's history into the biblical span of a few thousand years; their unwillingness to abandon claims clearly disproved, including the assertion that all fossils are products of Noah's flood; and their reliance upon distortion, misquote, half-quote, and citation out of context to characterize the ideas of their opponents.'

well yeah, a "purpose" is too closely related with the meaning of eternal and nothing is eternal, reasons however are a better way to go because its a down to earth way to live. To me the "purpose", in a limited sense is just to live and enjoy life while it lasts and that is more than a good enough reason to live by. as for the downs in life, well thats just part of the long adventure we are living.

my thoughts? now that you put it that way I would agree with Camus. the truth is that it is meaningless to even try and find a purpose in life.
EvolvedSkeptic (3 days ago)
Camus, in this context, appears to be saying that if you can find something that adds meaning to your absurd existence, then it must be important enough to die for as well. remember Sisyphus finds relief in his mundane and meaningless task assigned by the gods when he accepts the futile and tragic nature of his life. Its a noble, scornful acceptance, a thumbing ones nose so to speak at the absurdity of life, meaningless, directionless and terrifyingly free.

Albert Camus said in one of his Philosophical works (myth of sysiphus) that a good reason to live is also an excellent reason to die. What does he mean by this?

I console myself with the knowledge that faith and reason are two very different world perspectives. Faith is part of a subjective mindset that one adopts or unconsciously accepts as true for you, akin to fav pizza topping or perceptions of beautiful. Faith says nothing about intelligence, and is often evidence of poor critical thinking. Because we are conditioned to belief from childhood many aspects of faith are never examined or questioned. Also remember that reference to belief based on a persons high IQ, such as Stephen Hawkings believes in God therefore.... is an example of an evidential fallacy. For me Langan's faith is not scary but simply reflects the same cultural aquisition that he demonstrates with his choice of wardrob.

Hi there mate, I have recently been looking at some video about chris langan, it seems kind of scary to think that he is on religion's side considering his intelligence level.

Excellent page !
Love the blue !
May I purloin your Nietzsche quote about religion and asylums ?
EvolvedSkeptic (1 month ago)
I would be reluctant to ever use a sentence where the words 'christian' and 'think' are strung together. By definition, you simply cannot remain a christian if you continue thinking UNLESS you submerge your thinking beneath waves of muddy mysteries and dogamtic foam.

A recent study done by Nigel Barber has shown that Atheism will eventualy replace religion. Atheism has a strong correlation with economic realities, people who live in socialy secure countries feel more protected from life's uncertainties. of course this is going to take a very long time seeing as the best figure Nigel can give us is that Atheists only occupy one-tenth of the world's population.
