I am a 23 year old cannabis advocate from Houston, Texas. I have spent the past 4 years educating myself on the social & criminal justice issues surrounding cannabis prohibition. With an unbiased approach to this matter I have noticed that the laws prohibiting people from possessing cannabis are more harmful to society than cannabis is itself.

In 2008 police arrested 847,864 persons for marijuana violations, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation's annual Uniform Crime Report. Approximately 89 percent, 754,224 Americans were charged with possession only. The remaining 93,640 individuals were charged with "sale/manufacture," a category that includes all cultivation offenses, even those where the marijuana was being grown for personal or medical use.

We Americans are wasting too much of our law enforcement resources on incarcerating people who choose to consume a substance that has been proven without a doubt to be a safer alternative to alcohol & tobacco. The vast majority of people who consume cannabis are law abiding citizens. Furthermore I feel that our Constitutional rights are violated, specifically the 8th Amendment, which states "Excessive bail shall not be required, nor excessive fines imposed, nor cruel and unusual punishments inflicted." Putting people in jail over possessing cannabis, which such act harms no one else, is excessive & cruel punishment.

Now for all the prohibitionists who say "If we decriminalize cannabis it will be more available to the children." That is nonsense because cannabis is already more widely available to children than alcohol & tobacco are. In most situations, which depend on parent involvement, you can ask any high school student in America "Which is easier to obtain, weed or alcohol?" It is very likely that they would say weed.

I have also concluded that cannabis is also a safer more effective alternative to those poisonous pharmaceuticals BIG PHARMA wants to prescribe you. Although the extent of the medicinal value of cannabis has been disputed, it does have several well-documented beneficial effects. Preliminary findings indicate that cannabis could prove useful in treating inflammatory bowel disease (consisting of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), fibromyalgia, cancer, AIDS, schizophrenia, bi-polar, sleeping disorders such as insomnia, lowered intraocular eye pressure in glaucoma, nausea, asthma, vomiting, chronic pain, appetite loss, muscle spasticity from spinal cord injuries and multiple sclerosis, migraine headaches, depression, anxiety, seizures, cerebral palsy, Alzheimer's disease, diabetes, it can also help people with opioid dependence (heroin addition).
