If you're cold, then I'm cold too! Haha. I have this book too and haven't read it yet, but I'm guessing the same things will annoy me. I definitely don't believe in love at first sight, and even love in six weeks has me skeptical. Well, at least the illustrations are nice, I guess! I want to read some of the illustrator's other books, like The Principles of Uncertainty, which might be more our kind of thing.
So I have to belatedly thank you for the enabling because after I saw this in one of your haul videos, I went and bought it when I saw it at a used bookstore haha. I've never lived near the area it's set, but where I'm from in the US does have a lot of Hispanic immigrants, so I'd hear lots of comments and political stuff around that, so something like this book does sound interesting, although I guess depressing!
I'm going to have to read this! It sounds fascinating, and I really know so little about North Korea, so I have to learn more. And I can't imagine what it must take to escape, logistically and just personally what it would take to get up the courage to resist, so the personal stories sound like it'd make it really interesting.
... when it first came out too (the English version) and couldn't sleep for weeks! I was afraid of all TVs, especially haha. So I don't know if I'd be able to take reading the book! And I have seen Rosemary's Baby, the movie, and that freaked me out too, so I don't know how I'd do with the book! I hope you didn't spend all of October scared out of your mind, especially alone at nights! Haha.
Boston looks like it was so much fun! I need to go back. And the whale-watching trip!! That looked awesome! I think I went on one when I was a kid, and we didn't see anything haha.
Watching this made me smile just to remember how wonderful that day was! I think I've mentioned how none of my friends IRL like books, so it felt so fulfilling and gratifying to talk books and laugh with a bunch of ladies who are just as lovely (or more so, actually) offline as they are online! I can't wait to do it again.
First off, yesss to all of the things you said about meeting everyone!
I keep hearing amazing things about Jeff Lemire! Have you read Essex County? I'm guessing you have. I'm thinking of starting there, but Sweet Tooth sounds cooool too.
I just started using Audible too! I'm listening to The End of the Affair read by Colin Firth. Sigh. I love him. As I walk to work too, I listen to that or to podcasts. Literary Disco, Bookrageous, and Book Riot are my favourites!
... university I took a Woman in Literature class, and it was awesome. I actually think the majority of what we read was by women of colour. I wish I still had the syllabus, but three books I do remember really liking from then are "Scarlet Song" by Mariama Ba, "Memoirs of a Woman Doctor" by Nawal El Saadawai, and "Nervous Conditions" by Tsitsi Dangarembga. I've been meaning to re-read those for a while, and now I really want to!
This sounds really interesting, especially how it was based on Crowley! I must get around to reading some Maugham. I've had The Painted Veil for ages now. So many books, so little time...
Susie! This was the best! So many lovely dresses, and it was so cool to learn more about you too.
I love your story about getting married. It sounds so sweet and intimate!
I hope you get to see the ocean soon. I took it for granted growing up on the East Coast. Now that I'm away, I think of how amazing it is!
I'm a total cooking show addict too. I can't even get started on Top Chef or I'm GONE. I don't even like cooking, so I don't know why I watch in the first place!
Happy birthday!!! :D
Another lovely haul! I thought Make Good Art was amazing too. Careless People sounds really cool, so what a perfect gift from Renee!
I'm a sucker for interesting inscriptions in old books, so I would've wanted that copy too. But I had no idea Bruce was a stereotypical Australian name! I've heard before that it was seen as a stereotypical gay name in North America in the 70s or so, but I really have no clue where that came from. So much about Bruce haha.
I really liked this book too! The world was so interesting to me, and Seraphina was so relateable for me too. I just wasn't too crazy about the romance, though. I read a lot of people saying it's better than a lot of YA romances, which I guess is true, but I think I'm just impossible to please with romances. I'm heartless like that haha.
Yesss, I love this! I feel like I'm mostly okay with not stressing about reading at this point (aside from still stressing about the 13 or so books I'm partway through still ugh), but I can always use a reminder like this! My biggest problem is actually stressing about making videos about books, but I'm sure I'm just being silly about that too.
I loved loved Fahrenheit 451 too! I'd be happy to see a review and hear your thoughts and then I can gush even more about it in comments. I wasn't sure what to expect of it going in, but it's basically a book about fighting for books, so how could I not love it?
New York! Those clips are making me so excited to go back, especially to the Strand! And I love our chat clip again haha.
I love the way you shot and edited this! And yes, The Handmaid's Tale is brilliant! Your bitter aftertaste analogy is perfect haha.
I cannot stand summer either! I always feel so weird saying that, so yay it's not just me! The heat and humidity and stickiness and sweat make me so CRANKY! Can I just live in Australia for half the year so I get winter twice? I'll be a good member of society since I'll actually be chipper! Also, THAT BAG! I have a kinda similar one that's purple and has A Room of One's Own on one side. They are awesome.
I vote for American Gods because, one, it's Neil Gaiman, and two, I'm reading it now and can't put it down and would love being able to discuss it with you! But so many good choices. I understand your problem.
... And open and ready to be there for people in a way that I want to be, in a way that's about them and our connection and not just me. So it's a tradeoff and a balance for me.
I'm so curious to read Thoreau too because I want to see the full writing behind all the lovely quotes. And I love the Penguin Great Ideas series! They published my all-time favourite essay, A Room of One's Own by Virginia Woolf. I read it in university, and it had such an impact on me.
I think I laughed the whole way through this!
I'm so excited for this channel! Yay books! Yay Jessica! :)
I love Animal Farm! It was one of the first classics that I read on my own, so I have this extra love for it out of sentimentality. For poetry, have you read any Michael Ondaatje? His poem The Cinnamon Peeler is my absolute favourite. It's super sexy and sensuous! Also, I really want to read Zelda! I finished Z recently, and while I liked it, it mostly made me extra curious to hear true details about her life.
Great haul! I'm glad I found your channel through RinceyReads! I really liked the movie The Hours too. The only thing I've read by Virginia Woolf is her essay A Room of One's Own, which I highly, highly recommend!
Me too! I think once she grows more as an author I could love her books.
