You may have seen it in the news. Millions of children just like us forced to flee their homes and leave everything behind. These kids had houses, computers, pets and toys. They went to school and their parents had jobs. But conflict has forced them to flee their homes – and leave everything behind.
Many of them took nothing, others took whatever they could fit into a backpack. That’s all they had as they fled across desserts and oceans to find a safe place to stay.
The 40 Hour Famine has always been about living in someone else’s shoes and this year is no different. That’s why thousands of young New Zealand are going to live out of a backpack for an entire weekend to raise money so World Vision can provide a safe place for these children amidst some of the terrible things happening.
It might be hard to imagine cramming a lifetime into a backpack the way so many refugee children have had to but the backpack challenge lets us live in their shoes and understand what it’s like to lose everything, if just for a weekend.
The money raised will help World Vision set up child-friendly spaces in areas where these children and their families have fled to. Here they can play again with other children, do fun things like art and sport, and most importantly can start to attend school again so they can keep learning. There are teachers and community workers in the child-friendly spaces that can help kids talk about some of the hard things that have happened and help them to feel safe again. Child-friendly spaces let kids be kids again.
