"Fallout" by Todd Strasser. Books for Teens: 60second Book Review by Jenny Sawyer.
http://goo.gl/eyguXNIn "Fallout," author Todd Strasser imagines what would have happened if the threat of the Cuban Missile Crisis (nuclear war) and actually become the reality. It's 1962, and pre-teen Scott is dealing with the usual issues of growing up--friends, girls, identity--but with an added layer. Hanging over everyone is the specter of nuclear war.
When the bomb does hit, Scott's family is the only one in the neighborhood that's prepared, but their shelter isn't enough, and their best-laid plans go awry, when desperate neighbors force their way in. Suddenly, it's not just the people aboveground who are fighting for survival, but everyone in this underground prison, too.
"Fallout" has been classified as middle grade fiction, but readers beware. Although the author doesn't traffic in gratuitous violence, the terror of the situation, and the lingering questions about survival, are probably more suitable for teens than kids under 12.
