Almost every day a new clickbait article goes by making yet another absurd claim, be it ginger curing cancer, vitamin c curing HIV, or in this case, canola oil worsens memory. And all of this is based on some new paper that came out. This happens for one of two reasons. Either the journalist misread the paper, or the paper makes claims but doesn't have the evidence to back it up.
In this new series, we'll be either working with a great paper that is complex and exciting and break it down so the concepts are understandable. OR we'll be working with a paper that is at the heart of sensationalized garbage and picking it apart to see exactly WHY it's garbage. Through this the hope is that we can learn a lot about the differences between good papers and bad ones, and also explore some amazing topics along the way.
In this first episode we're examining a paper that's been spreading a lot lately that makes the claim that a canola oil rich diet worsens memory and can lead to alzheimer like symptoms. This would be terrifying if true, but the paper has more holes than swiss cheese and we'll be examining them one by one.
