I made a special trip to Galva, Illinois on September 17th, 2015, to gather some more footage for my upcoming special about Amtrak's Southwest Chief. As an added bonus, the California Zephyr was running behind schedule, so I got to see both trains ten minutes apart from eachother. Normally the Zephyr would be through here shortly after 4 PM, but was running about an hour late. I filmed the train as it passed Chester Street near downtown.
This stretch of railroad, BNSF's Mendota Subdivision, sees eight Amtrak passenger trains a day: Trains 3 & 4 (Southwest Chief), 5 & 6 (California Zephyr), 380 & 383 (Illinois Zephyr) and 381 & 382 (Carl Sandburg). The Southwest Chief started using this route in the mid-90's after the BNSF merger, instead of running on the "Transcon" between Chicago and Cameron, IL. The Carl Sandburg compliments the Illinois Zephyr service between Chicago and Quincy, and was added in 2007 to provide an additional round trip per day.
