https://vimeo.com/shavethemanSince 1851, the New York apothecary has been dedicated to serving customers formulas for skin and hair made with naturally derived ingredients.
The original Kiehl’s Pharmacy is in New York City; a historical, family-founded store located on “Pear Tree Corner” at 109 Third Avenue in the East Village neighbourhood.
This is definitely a company with heritage. Their Facial Fuel Energizing moisturizer is one of the best I’ve ever used. So I was very keen to take a look at this shave cream for the brush, when it was gifted to me recently.
The formulation is a true shave cream, that is, it is very soft and only a small amount is required for a 3 pass shave.
The cream lathered without much effort and provided more than adequate slickness for the shave. It’s interesting to note the three major ingredients that Kiehl’s wants us to concentrate on, according to their website.
Lavender
Menthol
Camphor - which is great if you happen to have oily skin.
These are by no means the only ingredients. In fact the ingredients list reads like the credits in a Cecile B DeMille film, they go on and on and on. And I’m certain that most of them provide very necessary supporting roles in producing the above average slickness and protection.
My concern is not with the newly formulated paraben-free edition, but with the olfactory challenge that I’m immediately presented with when I pop the lid off.
If you are a fan of musty old gym socks and moth balls that have passed there expiry date, then this offering may be for you. I mean really. Does anybody at Kiehl’s nose. I think the quirky lab-coat wearing skeletons in every Kiehls store may be a clue. This smell has forensic written all over it.
It’s true, the scent thankfully disappears throughout the shave as the menthol and lavender attempt to push through like B grade actors in a short season off-Broadway play.
Was the shave cream nourishing? Quite possibly, but to me it smelt more medicinal and a tad antiseptic.
Kiehl’s... traditional wet-shavers enjoy engaging all of their senses. I appreciate the time, effort and research you put into your high quality products. Perhaps equal amounts of time could be put into developing a scent.
For me,
I give the Kiehl’s Lite Flite Shave Cream for the Brush
8 lathering performance
7.5 slickness protection and cushioning
3 scent
