There are many atheists out there that do not agree with my approach to secular social activism. I have heard from many atheists that I "come off too strong" or "seem to anti-theistic", but I think what people fail to realize is that there is an extremely thin line between atheist activism and anti-theism.

That being said, I was really shocked when an atheist told me that atheists need to be silent. Her reasoning was that within time atheists will be considered normal and just like everyone else. I could not disagree with this more than I already do. It never benefits anyone to be silent. It did not benefit women to remain silent when they wanted equal rights. It did not benefit African Americans to be silent when they wanted equal rights. It does not benefit the LGBT community to be silent if they want equal rights. It certainly does not benefit atheists to be silent either. If you aren't vocal about what you want, you might never get it!

The atheist community needs to understand that in a perfect world, atheism would just be the lack of belief in a god. However, we live in a world that is held captive by religious beliefs, therefore atheism cannot just be the lack of belief in a god! I give this really terrible analogy of the baggage that is associated with atheism. Ready? Here we go.

Think of atheism like the PH scale. On one end you have your acids and on the other end you have your bases. Atheism has, with hundreds of years of misunderstanding, become an acid due to all the negative things attached to the term. Keeping with the analogy, if you maintain that atheism is a neutral thing—a 7 on the PH scale—and you mix it with all these acidic ideas, what happens? You are left with an acidic representation of atheism.

How do we solve this problem and attempt to make atheism a neutral or positive thing in this world stricken by religious devotion? I am so glad you asked that question! We have to add bases to the mixture! By speaking out, promoting positive atheism, getting active in our communities, all the while proclaiming our atheism—we can change the stigma associated with the term!
