Open Education initiatives aim at breaking down barriers to provide access to education for everyone. How do they work? They open up traditional, formalised education systems by eliminating academic admission requirements or by offering free, but accredited certification schemes. Open education is often realised through distance learning programmes and include e-learning, mooc and opencourseware.
Closely connected "Open Education" are "Open Educational Resources" (OERs). These are educational materials (like textbooks, curricula, syllabi, lecture tests, audio and videos), which are in the public domain or openly licenced. As they are free to be shared, used, and reused by everyone, everywhere, they will play a key role in improving education efforts around the world. For many people in the global south, these materials will provide up-to-date information that is easily accessible and shareable. For industrialised countries, they offer a great way of saving costs and to share best practices amongst learners and teachers.
