In this lesson viewers learn how to take good advantage of the best freeware available, for playing, database management and for training!

a - Scid: An extremely powerful program for managing databases. This fast, fully functioned database manager is explained in great detail by Thomas King.

b - BabasChess: A great client for playing on the Free Internet Chess Server. Thomas King explains the basics and demonstrates why this is where you should play your online chess.

c - ChessTempo: An online application that helps you to sharpen you tactics until even greatest of knives will fear you! Thomas King demonstrates how you can use ChessTempo to gain hundreds of points.

For Chess, Youtube is a fantastic resource; many players from far and wide to provide you with free lectures, here is my pick of the best:

Majnu2006

Majnu has a flare for teaching that simply cannot be matched by anyone else. He is able to methodically explain each plan with such detail and eloquence and his lovely accent ensures that everyone he says will never leave your mind!

krakkaskak (pronounced krau-kaus-kauk)

A Grand Master, former Icelandic champion and world leading expert on the Bird's Opening (1.f4) GM Henrik Danielsen's channel is an absolute must for those looking to improve, despite his strength, he is never unable to see things from the beginner's point of view and as such he provides quality analysis for players of all levels.

OnlineChessLesssons.Net

OnlineChessLessons.Net is one of the many sites online where you can pay to watch lectures from strong players, in what can only be described as a win for the "tubes" they also post full lectures here on YouTube! Each lecture is entertaining and is presented by a highly capable lecturer.

clausjensencom

Claus Jensen is a reasonably strong club player who has posted many analysis videos on YouTube. The analysis is well thought out and he articulates what he is saying quite well.

DraganLalic

DraganLalic is in an interesting situation to be a chess lecturer, a reasonably strong player himself (Fide 1978), Peter's strength is probably overshadowed by his parents, his father (Bogdan Lalic) is a GM, and his mother (Susan Lalic) is a WGM! In spite of this, Peter's channel is undoubtedly one of the best. His endgame course is (at the time I am typing this) easily the best on YouTube (although I plan to change that!), he has also made many videos devoted to tactics as well and has presented many of his (as well as Mike Closs') games. His analysis is always well structured and highly entertaining; and as such Dragan simply can't be missed!

SeanGGodley One of the stronger players on the Irish circuit, Sean Godley has also done his part in contributing to YouTube's vast library of excellent videos. He has fantastic series on Capablanca, the endgame and is your no. 1 for stop for analysis of current tournament games.

Kingscrusher

Webmaster of Chessworld.net (an excellent site for playing correspondence chess) Kingscrusher has presented many videos with insightful analysis, and is also the home of the "live blitz" where he has published hundreds of videos.

ChessNetwork

ChessNetwork is perhaps the best analyst on YouTube. It is truly remarkable how a player of Jerry's strength manages to penetrate into the beginner's mind and explain the purpose of each move. His analysis is often rather simple and easy to understand, and yet it still manages to not contain any serious errors, and usually explains every precise detail of every move. ChessNetwork is an excellent channel and an absolute must for those rated under 1400.

weaksquare

A relatively player with a natural flare for still producing high quality annotations of instructive games. His videos also demonstrate technical proficiency, and as such his videos make it very easy to absorb the information contained within them.

ChessNoir

For chess related new, and for professional analysis, it's fair to say that ChessNoir is YouTube's greatest resource. He has dozens of videos and he posts at a regular rate, not to be missed!
