After 2 years of waiting it’s time for the world premiere of Eton John Live In Columbia 9/13/1988. As this is the fourth show on the tour Elton still sounds fresh with very little growling but this will change in the days to come. I dedicate this to Ollie who’s birthday is today and also to Liz who gave us the tapes.
60 years on is one of the best versions on the whole tour with very little problems. I Need You To Turn To is pretty good. The King Must Die is were Elton phlegm’s out the call best friend and ending also has slight phlegm problems but the bulk of the song is clean and better than most versions. Burn Down The Mission has very minor growling but is 99% clean but also has wrong piano chords in the second chorus. Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word which has a bad growl in the middle of the song but Elton rectifies himself by singing what do I gotta do in falsetto ,one of the few times post-surgery he does this. Have Mercy On The Criminal which Elton intros from the live from Australia album for the first and only time, to the song which has growling which is typical for this song on this tour and the growling doesn’t sound appealing , Probably the worst vocal performance of the night.
Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding which is mostly good but I’m not a fan of the guitar solo here.

Tiny Dancer and The Ballad Of Danny Bailey both have some growling but are mostly good. I Guess That’s Why They Call It The Blues which has a lyric flub and some questionable drum fills and growling but does have a nice ending. Philadelphia Freedom is a highlight of the show with Elton nailing the falsetto Shine A Lights with the audience going nuts and crazy after them, Also has some nice falsetto woos also as a side note Elton hits the pre chorus with the (I) instead of (A) the first time he does this post-surgery. This is the best version on the Reg tour and is up there with the aids benefit as being the best post-surgery. The Bitch Is Back is an excellent version. Nikita which is excellent with a clean outro.

Sad Songs which has a great piano intro, the main part of the song is mostly clean minus a few growls but Elton does album phrasing here which I love. A Word In Spanish which has some growling but at least his tone is still intact. Mona Lisa’s And Mad Hatters Part 1 which is pretty good and Part 2 is excellent with Elton nailing the vocals and the jam is great. Daniel is excellent. I Don’t Wanna Go On With You Like That has some growling but some parts are cleaner than most versions example the first few lines of the songs, This sounds more like the record. Candle In The Wind is the definite version of the song beating Miami as the ending is cleaner.

Saturday Nights All Right For Fighting is mostly clean with the only growl in the whole song is the first aggravation, also it’s a highlight of the show with Elton hitting a c5. This is a candidate for best on tour. Your Song is good but Elton does growl out the quite simple but the ending is great. I’m Still Standing has Elton birding the first ab4 but other than that it’s great.
