Texas State Senator Wendy Davis spoke for more than 10 hours in a marathon filibuster that helped Democrats block the passage of a GOP bill that critics say would have forced most of the abortion clinics in Texas to shut down.

The bill known as SB 5, which is expected to be proposed again during the next legislative session, would ban abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy and require many abortion clinics to upgrade their facilities and adhere to the standards of ambulatory surgical centers. Doctors who perform abortions would need to have admitting privileges to a hospital within 30 miles of the abortion clinic.

Critics say the bill's strict provisions would have forced 37 of the state's 42 abortion clinics to close. Proponents say the restrictions are necessary to protect women's health and safety.

Davis began speaking at around 11am with the goal of filibustering until midnight, when the Texas Legislature's 30-day special legislative session was set to expire. She was stopped two hours short of her goal after Texas Lieutenant Governor Dewhurst ruled that she violated filibuster rules by straying off topic. Democrats appealed the ruling, sparking parliamentary maneuvers that prevented the Republican-dominated Texas Senate from voting on the bill until after midnight.

Texas Governor Rick Perry had promised to sign the bill.

For the craziest shopping day of the year, Black Friday, we dressed up like employees from a store, to fool customers into thinking we worked there. With the same attire, we were approached by many different customers who naturally believed that we could help them. They were soon after left in confusion as we said and did the most ridiculous things in their presence. It went on for quite a bit until the manager approached me, asking if I worked there.

During the last weeks of this campaign there will be debates, speeches and more ads. But if I could sit down with you in your living room or around the kitchen table here's what I'd say:

When I took office we were losing nearly 800,000 jobs a month and were mired in Iraq. Today I believe that as a nation we are moving forward again. But we have much more to do to get folks back to work and make the middle class secure again.

Now, Governor Romney believes that with that even bigger tax cuts for the wealthy and fewer regulations on Wall Street all of us will prosper. In other words he'd double down on the same trickle down policies that led to the crisis in the first place. So what's my plan?

First, we create a million new manufacturing jobs and help businesses double their exports. Give tax breaks to companies that invest in America, not that ship jobs overseas.

Second, we cut our oil imports in half and produce more American-made energy, oil, clean-coal, natural gas, and new resources like wind, solar and bio-fuels—all while doubling the fuel efficiencies of cars and trucks.

Third, we insure that we maintain the best workforce in the world by preparing 100,000 additional math and science teachers. Training 2 million Americans with the job skills they need at our community colleges. Cutting the growth of tuition in half and expanding student aid so more Americans can afford it.

Fourth, a balanced plan to reduce our deficit by four trillion dollars over the next decade on top of the trillion in spending we've already cut, I'd ask the wealthy to pay a little more. And as we end the war in Afghanistan let's apply half the savings to pay down our debt and use the rest for some nation building right here at home.

It's time for a new economic patriotism. Rooted in the belief that growing our economy begins with a strong, thriving middle class. Read my plan. Compare it to Governor Romney's and decide for yourself. Thanks for listening.

The Lesbian & Gay Peace Officers Association produced a video comprising of LGBT officers and civilian members of the Austin Police Department to send a message to LGBTQ youth that it does get better. This is part of the It Gets Better Project (www.itgetsbetter.org) and The Trevor Project (www.thetrevorproject.org) to reach out to LGBTQ youth who may be struggling due to bullying, harassment, and non-acceptance, and who may be thinking of committing suicide. Holland City Council voted 5-4 against a basic anti-discrimination ordinance on June 15, 2011 - preserving the "right" of people who don't like LGBTQ folks to fire and evict them. Regardless of job performance or history as a tenant, just because they're gay. This vote further disenfranchised an already vulnerable minority of people (LGBTQ) and now City Council members are telling them to go door-to-door to convince everyone to vote for a ballot initiative instead. Sometimes it feels like we've lost our minds.

May, 2008 our newly adopted (leased!) Greyhound, Ivy unexpectedly walked right up to a healthy squirrel standing stock still & quick as lightning, killed it with one shake.
