Sunday 4th May 2014, the Cats prevailed in miserable conditions at the MCG with a hard-fought win over the Tigers, who were on the rebound after a humiliating loss against Hawthorn. Geelong's strong start in the opening quarter and a half proved to be the difference in the end. The Cats kept Richmond goalless in the 1st quarter, kicked the opening 5 goals and led by as much as 35 points in the 2nd. 4 of the next 5 went the Tigers' way before a Mitch Duncan steadier made it a 23-point half time margin.

Richmond was on top of Geelong for much of the 2nd half. In the 3rd quarter, the Cats could only manage 1 goal courtesy of Duncan while the Tigers kicked 4. The difference at the final break was only 7 points. Despite squandering many opportunities to shut the door on the contest, Geelong steadied in the early stages of the final quarter. They scored 3 of the first 4 goals of the term to give themselves a 19-point advantage. Richmond kept coming and kicked the game's final 3 goals, but it was not quite enough as the last of those 3 was registered on the final siren. It wasn't pretty and they may have scored fewer goals than their opponents, but the Cats received the reward they sought. Duncan's contribution was vital (whom I mentioned previously if you didn't notice lol) and Harry Taylor was solid as a rock in the Cats' defensive half. Geelong by 5 points.

Geelong 11.15 (81) defeated Richmond 12.4 (76). Crowd: 34,377 at the MCG.
Geelong goal scorers: M. Duncan 2, T. Hunt 2, J. Murdoch 2, J. Bartel 1, S. Johnson 1, H. McIntosh 1, J. Selwood 1, T. Varcoe 1. Show less
