Andrew Wasson of Creative Guitar Studio answers a viewers question...
Q: The first two bands I ever played in were a; 4-piece and then a; 5-piece. I've now started a 3-piece. Bass, Drums and me on Guitar, (we all sing). I was wondering if you had any advice for rhythm guitar dynamics in a small band? There's so much space to fill, I often find myself at a loss to come up with good rhythm ideas. I think I need suggestions for this, (since most of what I'm doing doesn't sound too great).
Paul - Tulsa, OK. USA
A: Performing in a smaller band requires that we become much more aware of the chord voicings and overall dynamic effect of them. In order to produce greater control over the dynamics from the guitar we need to decide whether we'll use barre chords, or if we'll apply any open position chord types. Plus, when we're playing in smaller ensembles this also requires that we make certain kinds of decisions regarding when we play different techniques. This includes the use of; arpeggio picked harmonized lines and /or thinner chords such as double-stop phrases. In a smaller setting, we need to pay attention to the overall dynamics of the band. This includes how a particular section of a piece of music that we're performing might require us to execute different types of; rhythm playing concepts, solo lead guitar, or even how we end up using riffs. In the video I run through several examples of these concepts.
