Hello there...Just back from a few weeks traveling around the UK and came upon a few ideas for songs along the way including this acoustic original about the herring gutting girls around the1930's. They travelled the coast of the UK following the boats bringing in their catch of herring, which they would then get paid to gut.......(could have done with a new bottom E string to give it a bit more sparkle, but what the heck)
Oh the Gardenstown girls they travel around
from the Shetland Isles down to Yarmouth Town
they follow the boats where ever they are bound
following where ever the work can be found
so come on you sailors and haul away
and land your herrings on these docks today
the Gardenstown girls will make it pay
at 10p a barrel and they'll split it three ways
Oh they have their fun but they'll never get rich
with blood on their fingers from six till six
and when the weekend comes they head out on the Town
and talk about their homes and their sorrows they will drown
Oh the Gardenstown girls they stick together
friends till the end in any kind of weather
like sisters from birth they know each others worth
they would die for each other
the Gardenstown girls
And when the day is over then lullabies they sing
songs for their men that they find fair winds
and prayers would be spoken to keep them safe and dear
a prayer to keep their hearts from dread and fear
Oh the Gardenstown girls.........etc
