Glenn Gould - Bach Goldberg Variations, BWV 988 (Complete)
Enjoy! I've included all three of Gould's recordings of the Goldbergs so that comparisons will fly. Set in order, they are:
1-5) The famous 1955 Goldbergs, Gould's debut LP;
6-10) A live performance from the 1959 Salzburg recital, which falls nicely between the moods of the two better known recordings;
11-16) The 1981 recording, which was the first I heard - where the 1955 version is racing and packed with youthful spirit, the 1981 is more contemplative and reads as a continuing thread of emotions from Aria to Aria.

Glenn Gould plays a Consort of Musicke
Playing music(ke) by William Byrd, Orlando Gibbons, and Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck, Gould delivers a rare and mesmerizing performance. This is one of my favorite discs, and the arrangement of the pieces is something special in itself. In the hands of many others, these would be drab Renaissance museum pieces - Glenn gives us a moving hour that I often return to.
