The Island of Sodor was never meant to be a fictional 'storybook land' - it was supposed to be a real place. The Rev'd. Awdry wrote history books about the Island aimed at adult readers and produced maps of the island and had references to real places. The name 'Sodor' actually comes from an old Scottish word for the Outer Hebredes. Such was the Rev'd's enthusiasm for railways that he really did his homework and laid out every intricate detail of it. That's why the stories are so magical.
