When the animal inhabitants of remote South Island are captured and transformed into robotic slaves by the diabolical Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, it's up to Sonic the Hedgehog to rescue his friends before Eggman's schemes for world conquest and the foundation of an empire with a very stupid name come to fruition.

Sonic the Hedgehog succeeded in driving Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik off of South Island and thwarting the mad scientist's schemes, but that was only the beginning. Now, West Side Island has become a second South Island--Eggman is up to his old tricks once again, forcing innocent wildlife to serve as the power source for his robot minions. Eggman isn't the only thing to have made a reappearance on West Side Island, though... the Chaos Emeralds have resurfaced after their sudden disappearance on South Island, and for Sonic, the race is on once again to retrieve the mystic gems before the not-so-good doctor can utilize them in his latest doomsday scheme...

A strange storm, a sealed tower, and an anthromorphic rat with sticky fingers. These three things together spell the doom of nations, apparently. The dreaded Devil King, Zeon, is on the verge of breaking free from the prison that binds him... so it's up to a handful of schoolchildren to lead a Shining Force of gallant warriors and assorted oddballs on a crusade to end the demon's ambitions once and for all. And along the way, the hero will win over a beautiful princess with flowing locks, a skull full of hot air, and great, big tracts of land. Huzzah!
