  @ChiversVinny the flash will not sink with camera when shutter speed is above 1/250 sec. (in most cameras) so that's why black image. We demonstrated continuous light. so you need a lot of light to this shot without flash.

  @huudiduu if you tap shutter release you will hear IS mechanism buzzing as it will try to level off vibration. (what exactly it does I am not sure) but the point is that when on tripod there is no vibration so no point for IS to work and try to stabilize vibration that is not there...
