553 views 1 month ago
(KUTV) The FIRST Robotics competition is going on this weekend at the Maverick Center in West Valley City. Robots, built by high school students from different states and countries, are competing in a series of Aerial Assist games. It's a combination of basketball and volleyball, said Garrett Hansen, sophomore at Corner Canyon High School in Draper. His team is one of the rookie teams in the competition which he says involves a lot of problem solving but mostly, a lot of fun. Each high school team took six weeks to build the robots. They had to pitch businesses in order to receive donation to build the robots too. The competition has the support of the STEM initiative in Utah, which aims to encourage young people to take an interest in science, technology, engineering and math. The event is open to the public, and is free. The qualifying matches happen from 9:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Saturday.By Cristina Flores(Copyright 2014 Sinclair Broadcasting Group)
