John Cale & The Velvet Underground
John Cale is the Black Hole in the Universe of Rock Music, sending out massive gravity waves that have influenced many artists for more than four decades. Hardly noticed by a vast majority of the puplic, Cale has been a dominant force of what was to develop into Punk and Alternative Music.
This multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, arranger & composer, producer and a&r manager has been instrumental not only in creating the (Velvet) Underground Sound, but also recording & composing proto Gothic Music (Nico´s Marlbe Index & Desertshore, now repackaged as Nico: The Frozen Borderline cd) and also pioneering in Industrial- and Electronic music (John Cale New York In the 1960´s - Inside The Dreaam Syndicate).
His sound creations & -landscapes implanted a certain darkness and menace into Rock Music, unheared of untill then.
But Cale never dwellt on a certain style or cetagory, but instead with each of his albums covered numerous musical styles ranging from Classical to Punk, from Jazz Rock to Country or from Experimental to Hardrock.
Another astonishinging aspect of John Cale´s musical talents is his ability to rearrange a song in so many different ways, compareable maybe only to what Pablo Picasso did in painting, portraying an object from different angles. This is probably best documented in John Cale´s varios renditions of Heartbreak Hotel, either performed as a creepy Ballad, a pants off - stripped to the soul psycho version, a Heavyrock stampede or a combination of classical and experimental elements.
So go ForARide and discover the musical universe of one of the most inventive and influential pesonalities in modern music. Maybe with the help of youtube Lou Reed´s quote will become reality: John Cale is incredible, I hope some day he will be recognized as the Beethoven of our times!
