Highlights from this years FA Cup final Manchester City vs Stoke City.
Toure was City's Wembley hero with the semi-final winner against Manchester United - and the giant Ivory Coast midfield man was on target again 16 minutes from time to set the seal on their first top-level success since the 1976 League Cup win against Newcastle United.
The FA Cup 4th round with sixteen fourth round ties taking place over Saturday and Sunday. A good blend of fixtures sees five all-top flight affairs -- including arguably the tie of the round, Everton versus Chelsea -- mixed in amongst several Football League match-ups as well as a game between League Two side Torquay and the side that -- by virtue of being the only one remaining from outside the top four divisions -- I have an obligation to refer to as flying the flag for Non League football, Crawley Town.
The FA Cup third round is when the Premier League and Football League Championship enter, at which point there are 64 teams remaining in the competition.
The world famous FA Cup is the oldest, and largest football competition in the world. The first FA Cup competition in season 1871-72 had fifteen entries. (This season more than 700 took part.) Wanderers, a team formed by ex-public school and university players, won the first final 1-0 against Royal Engineers at Kennington Oval. A crowd of 2,000 attended the match and they each paid one shilling for the privilege. The first Cup Final goal was scored by Morton Betts, playing under the assumed name of 'A.H. Chequer'. He was an Old Harrovian who had once played for Harrow Chequers. The original trophy, much smaller than the present one, was made by Messrs Martin, Hall & Co. and cost £20. In 1895, after Aston Villa had won the competition, the cup was stolen from the window of a firm of football outfitters in Birmingham where it had been placed on display. It was never recovered. Manchester United have won the Cup the most times (11), followed by Arsenal (10) and Tottenham Hotspur (eight). Forty-two different clubs have won it.
