Looking for an easy way to capture pro audio on the go? You may want to check out the RODE SmartLav. This little guy connects to your iOS device and works exactly like a regular lavalier microphone. Check out my video review and demonstration above.

Overall I found the RODE SmartLav's performance to be more than adequate. Actually, it works great. Paired with RODE's official "RODE Rec" app, the SmartLav will record great audio at up to 48,000 Hz. In the video above, I compare the RODE SmartLav to my Canon 5D Mark III's built-in mic and the Zoom H1. As demonstrated in the video, the SmartLav will give your audio an "up close" sound as opposed to the distant sounds heard with the other microphones I tested.

The closer sound that RODE's SmartLav provides is definitely beneficial. It will help lessen background noise and it gives you more freedom to walk around if you're recording a video. Once you've captured the audio, you can download it to your computer from the RODE Rec app and sync it up in post with your video. I find the SmartLav to be incredibly useful for what I do, and in my opinion, you can't go wrong with this mic.

Over the next few weeks, I'll be putting together a new video series called, "Building The Ultimate Mac mini." This series revolves around upgrading a Mac mini as much as possible to create a Mac that's almost better than any of Apple's build-to-order minis. Let's take a look at some of the parts that we'll be using.

Here are the parts used in this series: Mac mini Intel Core i5 or Intel Core i7 (Used in this series) Kingston HyperX 16GB RAM Kit Kingston HyperX 240GB 3K SSD Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB SSD iFixit Dual Drive Kit iFixit Pro Tech Toolkit

Of course, you don't need these exact parts, but this will give you a good place to start looking if you'd like to follow along with the series. To put it into perspective, the Mac mini that we will be building totals out to $1,243 including all parts. If you wanted to order a Mac mini from Apple with roughly the same specifications (no performance difference, just dual 240GB SSDs) you'd have to shell out $1,899. That's a difference of $656!Save yourself some money, buy the parts, and follow along.

Obviously, the DIY method of building a great computer is the winner here. So stay tuned for this upcoming series. I will be posting more videos from the series over the coming weeks. Recently, Philips expanded its Hue line with an integrated Bloom lamp and LightStrips. Today, we're taking a closer look at the new LightStrips. If you'd like to check out my review of the Bloom lamp click here. Check out the video above for my review and demo of these awesome Hue-enabled accent lights.

The LightStrips connect to your existing Hue bridge. Because of this, you're able to take advantage of the same features and functionality offered by Hue. Overall, I'm a big fan of Hue, but I wish Philips offered them in shorter increments. Currently, you can purchase a 6.56 foot strip of these lights for $89.95. As commenter gtaz19 on my YouTube video noted: You can use the part you cut off or even add length if you want. you should state that in your video. you can either solder it back on with wire extending the area, or you can use RGB LED strip clips to do it w/o solder. You can then make jumps between lit areas or use a LED strip amp to add length for as long as you'd like!

Though in my opinion, I don't recommend modifying the product, but you do have this option if you're willing to do the research. Check out my review above, and let me know what you think in the comments below.

If you're a fan of Philips Hue, you need to check out the revamped Bloom lamp. This new release is fully integrated with Hue and works great as an accent light. Check out my video review and demo above.

It's important to note that you're going to need the Philips Hue starter kit in order to use the Bloom lamp. If you haven't seen my video on the starter kit, you can check it out here. The new Bloom lamp connects to the Hue's base station or "bridge" allowing you to control it over Wi-Fi, 3G, or LTE using an iOS or Android device.

The Bloom is very saturated and puts out a good amount of light (120 lumen). It's also plug-and-play, so you'll be able to freely move it around in your house without having to set it up each time. Simply plug it in and you're good to go. Of course, you'll need to initially set it up within the Hue app when you first use the lamp, but after that, it's a breeze to use and works great.

I'm in love with the Hue system. Not only do these lights cut down your energy usage, they are perfect for setting just about any mood. And with IFTTT integration, you can really make them do some cool things. Check out my video overview/demo above and let me know what you think about the Bloom lamp.

Currently, the Philips "Friends Of Hue" Bloom Lamp is only available in Apple Stores. you can pick it up for $79.95, but I assume, much like the Hue starter kit, this lighting fixture will eventually make its way to other retailers like Amazon.

If you've been looking for a beautiful and versatile stand for iOS devices, check out my review of the Twelve South HiRise for iPhone 5 and iPad mini. This is an all aluminum stand that can be adjust to fit many different cases and it perfectly matches any existing Apple products you may have. Check out my video review above for a closer hands-on look at the new HiRise Stand.

As I mentioned, this stand is constructed using the same kind of aluminum that Apple uses. It has the same color and tone, and in my opinion, is the best looking iPhone/iPad mini stand I've seen yet. The best part is, HiRise for iPhone is completely adjustable and will allow you to use it with most cases. See the above video for more details.

The only thing I can possibly see as a downside is that you're going to need to use your own Lightning cable with this stand. Because it's so versatile, it requires that you install an Apple Lightning cable (which you'll need to provide.) So if you're not comfortable using your only cable with HiRise, you'll need to buy an extra one or look elsewhere.

The bottom line: This stand is not only a beauty, but it's also very functional. It can hold and iPhone, iPad mini, iPod touch, or iPod nano and works with a wide variety of cases. It's also quite affordable. Twelve South's HiRise for iPhone and iPad mini is currently available for $34.99 on Amazon or directly through the company's website.

What's the best waterproof case on the market? I used to think it was the Incipio Atlas, but recently, LifeProof has completely changed my opinion with its nüüd case for iPhone 5. Take a look at my video review above to find out why.

Not only is this case more rugged than the company's other offerings, the nüüd series of cases are designed with one concept in mind: Make the best waterproof case without a built-in screen protector. That's usually my problem with waterproof cases. I hate the tiny gap between the device's screen and the actual protector.
