Re ISON, you're right some astronomers think it could be as bright as the full moon or maybe even brighter. And it is thought it could be the Great Comet of 1680. It remains to be seen how bright it actually will be though - often, comets that are though...

Further to previous comment - many amateur astronomers also use programmes like Starry Night to direct their telescopes to objects in the sky. It would also be very apparent to them if there was something wrong with the software.
