Roots don't seem to burn very well. I had a hard time just keeping the fire hot because the soil absorbed a lot of the heat I think. I've pretty much given up on this for now.

Superglue does pretty well for cooler areas, red RTV silicone does better since it handles up to 650 deg. F. JB Weld also works pretty well and stays hard. On some things I've combined red RTV with black chimney adhesive (which is good up to 1200 deg.) The combination is more pliable and smooth. ...

Thanks! It was fun to build it and get the satisfaction of seeing it run well. All of my pop can engines eventually self-destructed, though, when they cooled too fast and imploded. Maybe a little snifter valve would prevent this.

approtechie approtechie commented:

Well, I suppose you could say that since the engine's not actually driving any load in this video, but the point is that the shaft power potential is there and has been measured. Many loads can be driven by the engine and I show a number of them in my other videos.

I would like to have seen the bottom of the pot after you were done. That's always a sure sign of how much the stove smoked and how much of the volatiles didn't get fully burned. It appeared from the side shot of the pot at the end that it was blackened on the sides. If the wood is not fully dry ...

approtechie approtechie commented:

I've also lived in the Philippines and used rice husk stoves and I know how they burn, even with forced air. The flame they produce does not look like this. To get those beautiful blue flames you need to first get rid of the moisture and volatiles. Adding coal dust certainly helps.

I like how you used the top of the water bottle for your power diaphragm cylinder. I'm wondering if it didn't add a lot of dead volume to the engine, though.
