Umm, negative... Lots of things use video memory, mainly textures and meshes (3d models) that get loaded/swapped into the memory from your hard drive. Newwer games have 4096x4096 or even 8192x8192 resolution textures which are massive regardless of compression, so more memory = more / higher quality textures available to load.. That's just games.. Of course if you were playing something other than half-life 2 (10 years old) you might realize this.
