Check out the full uncut version of my interview with Slipknot's #3 Chris Fehn
Slipknot is a heavy metal band from Des Moines, Iowa. After a number of lineup changes and difficulties early on, the current lineup of Slipknot finally released their self titled debut album in 1999 under Roadrunner Records.
The record was a surprise smash, instantly putting Slipknot on the map of heavy metal music. Featuring the hit singles Wait and Bleed and Spit It Out, it went on to be certified double platinum and is still to date the band's best selling album.
Slipknot's bizarre image and crazy on stage antics soon earned the band a huge following. And with such a large fanbase, expectations were high for their follow up record Iowa, named after their home state. But after months of hard work, Iowa lived up to expectations and took the band's status from underground legends to mainstream superstars.
Landing at #3 on the Billboard Charts, Rolling Stone called Iowa "the first great record of the nu metal era." Fans agreed, praising Slipknot and their break from the norm of popular music. Even the Grammy's took notice of the band, nominating the song Left Behind for a Grammy.
After several more headlining tours in front of their crazed, obsesed fans, Slipknot went back into the studio to record their third album in 2003. And while the band had already been nominated for Grammys, sold millions of records and toured to hundreds of thousands, there was still one obstacle left in their way. Despite all of their success, the band had not received much radio play.
All of this changed with the release of Vol 3: (The Subliminal Verses) in May 2004. Featuring their biggest hits to date like Duality, Vermillion and Before I Forget, Vol 3 debuted at #2 on the Billboard Charts and went on to be certified platinum. Vol 3 also featured another Grammy winning song, Before I Forget, and the most popular Roadrunner Records music video of all time, Duality.
Over the next few years Slipknot continued to work hard, touring worldwide and continuing to boost their image as a unique metal band with an unprecedented live performance. Several of the band's members also worked on side projects, including Corey Taylor with his band Stone Sour and Joey Jordison, who played drums for acts like Rob Zombie and Korn.
But all of the side projects were put on hold in 2008 so Slipknot could go back into the studio to record their much anticipated fourth album, All Hope Is Gone. And while after so much success expectations were certainly high, the band delivered with their heaviest album ever. It paid off, with All Hope Is Gone exploding onto the charts and becoming Slipknot's first number one album.
Immediately after Slipknot embarked on the All Hope Is Gone World Tour, featuring five brand new singles from the popular album. The band was bigger than ever and it seemed that nothing could slow down the nine brothers from Iowa.
But on May 24, 2010, tragedy struck the metal community when Paul Gray, Slipknot's bassist, was found dead in a hotel room. It was later learned that he had died of a morphine overdose, a tragedy that shook Slipknot to its core, and put the band's future in jeopardy.
Today, many of Slipknot's remaining members have moved on to other projects. And without Paul Gray, many believe that the core of the band is missing and that any future music from Slipknot is unlikely.
But Maggots know and believe that Slipknot was built on the idea of overcoming adversity and hardship. And while the future is uncertain, Slipknot has already blazed a trail into metal history and will go down as one of the most iconic acts of their time.
And so fans and critics alike are waiting to see if Slipknot will be back to vent their raw feelings and emotions once more to a captivated world audience.
