This is the first episode of Data Stream which covers the birth, history and endearing relevance of the Metroidvania sub-genre. Metroidvania in its simple form is a portmanteau term; which is the mixture of two (or more) words to make a new one (like brunch or spork). In this case, the portmanteau is the mixture of the game titles Castlevania and Metroid to become Metroidvania. The term Castleroid is also interchangeable with Metroidvania to mean the same thing, but I don't like that term... it sounds like a huge castle-sized boil on someone's ass.
Anyway, after Metroidvania was first coined as a term to create an absent but associated link between the gameplay tropes of specific Castlevania and Metroid games, it would later go on to become known as a genre in and of itself -- that is what this video is about.
