Cambodia is a country scarred by a brutal, deadly recent past and many people still suffer the daily struggles of poverty. Despite being rich in natural resources, decades of war and conflict have left Cambodia one of the world's poorest countries. Tonle Batie is a small rural village 30km south of the capital Phnom Penh. The depth of poverty that villagers in Tonle Batie face varies -- everyone is poor but some are much poorer than others, some surviving on as little as 20p a day.

In 2003 the community of Ogongora fled their village as rebels advanced. In 2005, after two years in camps, the residents returned. With they had nothing. Houses were burnt and destroyed. Crops, cattle and all livestock gone. All appeared lost.

What was left -- by the grace of God -- was hope, and the raw potential in the people to improve their own lives.

Everybody farms in the countryside around Cajamarca. What little land people have is used to grow potatoes and rear a few animals, but production is low, and unpredictable rains make life harder. Many families are left struggling to survive.

And yet this is a community that is bursting with potential. People here love life and are determined not just to survive but to improve their lives.
