No, mine has stayed in place for over a year. Just make sure the screws are tightened really well. Worst case scenario you'll have to re-tighten the screws.

Starting from the plug and working your way up to the headphone, bend the wire slightly and see if the sound goes in and out or gets distorted. Eventually, you should find an area in the wire that makes the sound go in and out like on/off switch. This is where your short is located.

I know that the electrical tape doesn't look great, but I would just leave it be. Nothing will really happen because the mechanism that holds that wires in place is inside the plug.

You might want to do that because that way you make sure you are making a connection with the ground connector (the largest one). Then you can connect the regular ground (the bare copper wire).

It might, but you'd have to cut the wire pretty close to the plug to make sure you remove the short. It's worth a try though. Just follow my Headphone Wire repair video to see how to prep the wires.
