Janet Schiff invented the cello with a guitar and coat hanger at age 7. After practicing that way for 3 years Janet began formal cello studies at The Wisconsin Conservatory of Music under Julie Hochman (Julliard, Hawthorne Trio). At the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Janet learned gold from world-renowned cellist, Wolfgang Laufer (Fine Arts Quartet). Janet has had the opportunity to work with and study under many other fine musicians. Schiff performs, teaches, and records with her 1913 Romanian cello and resides in Milwaukee, Wisconsin U.S.A. Schiff uses Jargar steel strings for their bright and quick response, dark Hill rosin for precise tones, and a Bam cello case for protection of her beloved instrument and bow. Cutting edge yet classical, Schiff employs the Fishman cello pickup and other technologies for live performances.
