Chasing the Canadian Pacific Toys for Tots Train and More

216 views 5 days ago
On the weekend of December 7 and 8, 2013, Canadian Pacific teamed up with Amtrak, Dunkin Donuts and Toys for Tots to run the 15th annual Toys for Tots train. The train ran northbound over the former Delaware & Hudson from Binghamton, NY to Kenwood (Albany), NY on Saturday and continued north to Rouses Point, NY on Sunday. Power for the train was newly rebuilt CP GP20C-ECO 2252, Amtrak former F40PH non-powered control unit 406 and Amtrak P40DC 822 ahead of four heritage and four Amfleet coaches. The D&H "lightning stripe" 7312, which had lead the train in several past years, was missed by all especially after photos of the unit wearing CP candy apple red paint had begun floating over the internet a few days prior to the weekend of this years' train.

Our chase begins at Mechanicville, NY next to the photogenic XO tower where Pan Am Southern's (former B&M) mainline joins CP's (former D&H) Colonie and Freight Subdivisions. The train, running under symbol 01T, throttles up after making the first stop of the day to distribute donated toys. We catch him next cruising past Fort Edward passing the historic depot after making the second stop of the day at Saratoga and a meet with train 252. After stopping at Whitehall, we view him from the fishing pier just north of town as he charges north across the southernmost tip of Lake Champlain. At Ticonderoga, the Toys for Tots train takes the controlled siding to make a perfect meet with southbound loaded oil train 608 with a ratty looking UP unit second out. Continuing north, the train hugs the shore of Lake Champlain, blasting through several rock cuts approaching Port Henry. At Westport, southbound Amtrak "Adirondack" no. 68 arrives and departs the station first before making a meet with the Toys for Tots train on the siding just south of this location. Our final shot is the "toy train" passing the historic depot as he continues north to Rouses Point.

Thanks for watching!
