  I was fortunate to get to stay for two nights at Mono Lake. This allowed me to shoot during the day as well. In this trip we experimented with focus ramping using a device my dad put together. You can see the focus ramping clips at: 0:09 and 0:33.

  Mojave National Preserve Milky Way Time-Lapse

  This month my dad and I headed out to Mojave National Preserve to do some Milky Way Time-Lapse and astrophotography. My dad and I modified a Meade goto telescope mount so that we could mount a camera on it for pan-tilting time-lapse. Now we can follow the stars as they move across the sky.

  Death Valley Milky Way Time-Lapse

  I headed out to Death Valley to take some Time-Lapse. Unfortunately I arrived as the sun was setting and had to scramble to set up. I'd like to go back and find a better spot for time-lapse. The goal for this trip was to try some panning and tracking time-lapse. I wanted to get a panning time-lapse that tracked the constellation Orion. Unfortunately that sequence didn't turn out very well because I messed up the settings on that one. (That's the very fast sequence at 0:33.)
  
  On the last sequence (0:35) I had my camera piggybacking my telescope while it was tracking the sky. This let me take longer than usual exposures without star trails. The exposures were 40 seconds instead of 20.
  
  I couldn't believe how many satellites were flying around at the end!
  
  I'm happy the cool part of the Milky Way is starting to make an appearance again!

  Joshua Tree Starry Time-Lapse

  I headed out with my dad and brother to Joshua Tree to take some time-lapse of that iconic desert. We slept under the stars while the temperatures dropped below 17 degrees Fahrenheit.
  
  We stayed at White Tank Campground. The arch is called Rock Arch and was visited all through the night by different photographers that braved the cold.
  
  One of the goals of this trip was to try to get a close up of the sun and moon setting. I really liked seeing the earthshine on the moon! :)

  Geminid Meteor Shower Time-Lapse 2012

  I headed out to Big Sur to watch the Geminid Meteor shower of 2012!
  I experimented with two things for this video. Persistent Meteors and dimmed Star Trails.
  
  In the second sequence I really wanted to have persistent meteors. It was very labor intensive to get the shooting stars to linger. Basically I had to cut each meteor out and then have that be on a higher track. Then have that track fade out. (I hope that made sense!)
  
  I used Star Trails in the first and third sequence because that is much less labor intensive way to show meteors and have them persist.
  
  I developed a new method for making star trails. In normal star trails, the trails are bright and cause the image to lose detail in both the stars and the Milky Way. In my new technique, I've made it so the trail is dimmer and the original frame is more pronounced so that there is still detail in both the stars and Milky Way.
