Breathe in. Breathe Out. That's all that crossed Annie Blake's mind as her feet collided in a rhythm against the pavement, her chest pumping in and out as oxygen flooded through her veins, willing her to run even further through the streets of Fairfield. She had never been much of a runner, not like her mother had been anyway, but these four words were what she would always associate with running; Breathe in. Breathe Out.
It had been Seven months; Seven brutal months that neither her, nor her sister, Sydney, could fully heal from. Leukemia had not only killed her mother, but it had killed her as well.
Smile. That's what she did to make it through the days, the weeks, the months. When anyone would even mention her mother, she'd fake a smile, pretend that everything was okay, when, if anyone had looked just a little bit beneath the surface of her smile, they would see how broken she truly was; she wasn't fine. She was the farthest thing from 'fine'.
Everyone in town reminded her of her mother, not to mention they all knew what happened.
Escape. That's what she wanted; what she needed. -- Clutching her books against her chest as she made her way up the steps of Fairfield High, she took in one deep breath before pushing open the doors of the school, plastering a smile across her face in order to fool everyone, as always.
No indication of her problems meant no questions; the way she liked things. And yet, sometimes, just sometimes, she wished that someone would actually care enough, would actually look deep enough, to see that she wasn't happy. But that's the problem with Fairfield, it's perfect; everyone's supposed to be perfect and happy.
"Hey Ann!" her best friend, Cali Clark, chirped, walking over to stand beside Annie's locker before they would begin walking to homeroom together . . . as usual.
Forcing the corners of her lips upward, she replied, "Hey Cali, what's up?" She leafed through the binders that were haphazardly piled in her locker and, after finding her Chemistry binder, turned to face Cali.
"I heard that there are going to be three new students here. Their family just moved here," Continuing, she squealed with delight, "I can't believe it!" She added, just as excitedly, "we haven't had new residents here in Fairfield since, well, since I moved here in the second grade."
"Really?" Annie questioned, in disbelief because, as Cali said, Fairfield never had new residents and she, quite honestly, needed some new people to have a fresh start with. People who would never think that she had issues, not that anyone here even realized it, and they have known her since she was born.
"Yes, really," Cali retorted simply, flipping her dark brunette curls over her shoulder. "Listen, I forgot to run my English paper to Mr. Samson's class, so I'll catch you later. Tell me if you see any of the new kids!" And then she was gone, leaving Annie by herself, alone.
Turning back to face her locker, she threw her backpack into her locker, shutting her locker immediately following the 'bang' sound her bag made as it collided with the back of her locker. She jumped as she saw that someone had been leaning against the lockers' next to hers, placing her hand against her heart.
His sandy brown hair fell in his face, but not enough so that it didn't cover his oceanic blue eyes; he chuckled softly, folding his arms across his chest as he spoke softly in a voice as smooth as velvet, "Did I scare you?"
Pushing a strand of her light brown curls out of her face, she retorted, "Just a bit. I don't usually have people sneaking up on me, especially people I don't know."
He stared at her intently for a moment before replying, "Well, I'm Liam. Liam Carson." Extending his hand, he continued slyly with a smirk spreading across his face, "And now you know me."
She faked a smile, "Well aren't you clever."
"That's what they tell me," he smirked in reply, leaning the palm of his right hand against the locker behind her, causing her to begin backing away until her back was against her locker. "So now that you made an assumption about me," he whispered, his breath just being able to collide against her face, "Let me make one about you."
She stared up into his oceanic eyes, retorting, almost inaudibly, "Like what?"
"For starters," he began, "the smile you have had on your face," he continued, pointing at her lips, "it's fake. As I suppose many of them are."
"What makes you so sure?" she questioned him, pushing him a tad bit back as she tore herself away from the lockers.
Taking a step closer to her, he retorted smugly "The way you're not denying it."
