It's a psychological break down. To create a military, you have to create soldiers out of individuals. You have to literally break down every aspect of the person until you can use them like a tool, where they will abide by your instruction without thought. It sounds horrible, and I suppose that's an opinion thing, but it's necessary to create an efficient military. So that's all they're doing. They just have to break down his personality until they get him back to the basics.
