I'm actually a pre-pharmacy student in college, but I decided to never give up music. I started sequencing midis at VGmusic, but I eventually decided to switch to soundfonts and VSTs eventually. To start out, I recommend using the SGM soundfont, even though it's gigantic (300- 500+ MBs). However, as much as I use nice synths, I still think the basics are very important and that a strong midi foundation is important for a strong song.
