    ___

"So you're part of the mining guild then?" - Princess Leia Organa

Cloud City seen in The Empire Strikes Back was originally designed for early concepts of A New Hope. In the earlier drafts of Episode IV, Princess Leia is not held hostage on the Death Star but on an Imperial city named Alderaan, which was a floating city in the clouds inspired by an episode of Flash Gordon. However, to simplify the plot, the Death Star was made into the all-purpose threat, so the prison rescue was moved from Alderaan to the planet-destroying battlestation. When it came time to write The Empire Strikes Back, George Lucas re-used the abandoned idea from A New Hope, which Ralph McQuarrie had already done paintings of in 1975.

"I don't mind flying, but what you're doing is suicide." - Obi-Wan Kenobi

Filming the speeder chase through Coruscant in Attack of the Clones was no easy feat. A life-size physical model of the vehicle was built on a special rig called a gimble, which allowed it to pitch and roll and simulate the actions of flight. Hayden Christensen held on to it as it moved back and forth, doing all the stunts himself. Meanwhile Zam Wesell was filmed inside her vehicle reacting left and right based on George Lucas' direction. Finally, computer graphics models were made, including one of a digital Anakin Skywalker, to flesh out the scene in some of the more dynamic - and dangerous - shots.

    ___

"We will use all our resources to unravel this mystery..." - Mace Windu

There is a very dynamic shot in Revenge of the Sith, where Anakin Skywalker crash-lands the Invisible Hand - General Grievous's flagship during the Battle of Coruscant. As it crashes, we see the Invisible Hand come in from a distance, and finally stop only a few feet from the camera. George Lucas says he doesn't normally do this kind of shot, but there is a director who does: Steven Spielberg. Lucas says that he designed this shot as a homage to his old friend. The connections go even deep, though. During pre-production, George Lucas actually used Steven Spielberg as a guest director for the film. Having some spare time, Spielberg got involved in directing some of the pre-production animatics for Episode III, including the lightsaber battle on Mustafar - he's even listed in the credits for his work.

"You wanna buy some death sticks?" - Elan Sel'Sabagno

In Episode II, there's a scene where pusher Elan Sel'Sabagno tries to sell Obi-Wan Kenobi some death sticks. Originally, that scene wasn't supposed to contain any visual effects, but George Lucas decided he wanted the dealer to have a glowing stick in his hand, and antenna on his head. After they were added, Lucas didn't think it made sense for him to have both antennae and ears, so his ears were removed digitally. The stick in his hand magically disappears as he twirls his fingers.

"Sir! They've gone up the ventilation shaft!" - Tey How

The Phantom Menace used computer graphic imagery in innovative new ways, and it also used computer graphics with an unprecedented frequency. According to producer Rick McCallum, one of the only shots in the entire film to not contain a visual effect element of any kind is the brief shot of the poison gas coming out of the vent on the Trade Federation ship.

"R2-D2, it is you! It is you!" - C-3PO

Although it's virtually impossible to tell apart, a total of eight R2-D2 units were made for The Empire Strikes Back. Two of these were operated with actor Kenny Baker inside, two were remote controlled, a fifth was used for testing, and the last three were special lightweight models capable of being lifted and carried, and ejected from the Dagobah swamp creature's mouth. That shot also happened to be filmed in George Lucas' backyard swimming pool.

"Holding her is dangerous. If word of this gets out, it could generate sympathy for the Rebellion in the Senate." - Daine Jir

In Episode IV, there's a scene between Han Solo and Obi-Wan Kenobi where Han brags that the Millenium Falcon flew the Kessel Run in under twelve parsecs. Now a parsec is a measurement of distance, not speed or time. So Han is claiming that it flew something in a shorter distance than it actually is. It might not make sense, you might think its a writing error, however, the Kessel Run is a smuggling route that takes the pilot through a bunch black holes, known as the Maw Cluster. Han is such a good pilot, and the Millenium Falcon is such a fast ship that Han is able to fly very close to these black holes - closer than most pilots would dare. He is able to shave off some of the distance by navigating through the route and completing the Kessel Run in approximately 11.5 parsecs.

"When 900 years old you reach, look as good you will not hmm." - Yoda

During pre-production of The Phantom Menace, concept artist Iain McCaig was given the job of making a younger version Yoda. As part of his creative process, he started by imagining an 8-year-old Yoda and created a whole childhood story for him. Eventually, these concepts lead to the creation of its own character, and a younger, female "Yoda" appeared as a new character named Yaddle, a Jedi Master who appears on the Jedi Council in Episode I.

    ___

"You have your moments, not many of them but you do have them." - Leia Organa

In Attack of the Clones, there's a scene where Obi-Wan Kenobi is being chased through an asteroid belt by Jango and young Boba Fett, and ends up hiding his ship on the side of an asteroid to escape. Han Solo also pulls a similar manuever on the Imperial fleet chasing the Millennium Falcon through an asteroid field in The Empire Strikes Back. However, the only person who saw through Han's trickery was Boba Fett. Why? Because he had seen that trick before when he was a kid.

"These are good people, Padme. You'll be safe." - Anakin Skywalker "Anakin!" - Padme Amidala

In Episode II, there is a scene just before Anakin goes in search for his mother on Tatooine, where he has a conversation with Padme. Padme walks out of shot and the camera pans to their shadows as they talk. While standing there, Anakin's shadow resembles that of Darth Vader. According to the DVD commentary, the Vader shadow that Anakin casts was not a special effect but pure coincidence. It was his destiny.

"You are such a joker, Annie." - Wald

Most people know Warwick Davis as the actor who played the lovable Ewok, Wicket, in Return of the Jedi. Only 11 years old at the time, Return of the Jedi was the first film he ever worked on. However, Mr. Davis is also in The Phantom Menace, and appears more than once! He plays Wald the Rodian, a podracer spectator named Weazel, and a Mos Espa street trader. He also doubled for Jedi Master Yoda in a scene where Yoda appears to be walking with other members of the Jedi Council while exiting a space cruiser.
