No you can use real machines! I was just worried about your comment. You'd be amazed at how many people try to join the host machine to the domain. That's NEVER gonna work! They have to reboot the host machine, then they can't log in since the (virtual) domain controller isn't running.

Probably a DNS error. Hopefully, you are connecting another VM to the domain and not your real machine. So, give that other VM as static IP Address. Then where it asks for DNS server give it the DC's IP Address. That's usually all it is.
