In fact, fully 97 percent of the seals killed in the commercial seal hunt over the past five years have been less than 3 months of age and most were one month old or less. At the time of slaughter, many of the pups had not yet eaten their first solid meal or taken their first swim. Sealers target the baby seals because their skins are in prime condition and fetch the highest prices.

Another Victory for the Seals - The door to one of the largest markets for seal products has now been slammed shut – the Customs Union of Belarus, Kazakhstan, and the Russian Federation has banned the import and export of harp seal skins. It’s the biggest victory in the campaign to end commercial sealing since the European Union (EU) banned non-Inuit seal products.

There's only one thing wrong though - your belief that a majority of people support whale 'hunting' is totally incorrect. It's estimated that in the US (for example) only 27% support whaling & the number is only this high due to ignorance amongst the general population regarding the facts of the issue.
