Drawing on dubstep, soul, ambient electronica, jazz and dub Submotion Orchestra have been making waves and rapidly building a significant reputation as one of the most intriguing ensembles to surface in the last 12 months. Their deep bass driven grooves combine with an ethereal piano, a plangent trumpet, and deft percussion to create the perfect setting for the fragile beauty of Ruby Wood's vocals and the celestial electronics of sound designer Ruckspin. The result is something that is really quite special.
The brainchild of drummer Tommy Evans and Ruckspin, Submotion Orchestra are a multi instrumental multi talented ensemble comprising:
Vocals - Ruby Wood
Trumpet - Si Beddoe

Right from the off live has been a key strength of the band. Formed in Leeds in 2009 and opening the account with a now legendary weekly residency at the intimate Hukaz bar, the Orchestra swiftly built a devoted following by giving the fans the opportunity to see the band create new material up close and personal.
Their debut release, the Finest Hour EP, released on hip underground label Ranking Records lit up the world of the musical digerati unleashing torrents of Twittery and some heavy Facebook action. It also brought the ensemble to the attention of a certain Gilles Peterson, who instantly became a believer. Mucho play on the aforesaid Mr Petersons show ensued, followed by a license for Finest hour on his Brownswood Bubblers album series, a series which had already featured such notable talent as Jamie Woon, Flying Lotus and Floating Points and then to round off a brilliant year there was the ultimate seal of approval - a Radio 1 Live at Maida Vale session
But 2010 was not just about radio. In their hometown the band worked their way up through a series of ever larger venues drawing ever larger crowds whilst also making the first steps to spread the word nationwide with live shows in every town that would have them. Music lovers across the country saw for themselves what the fuss was all about and the fan following went national
In fact, word was spreading so rapidly about just how good this band was that those hard to get summer festival slots opened up as if by magic and the Submotion all stars hit the festival trail with a vengeance. Appearances at the Big Chill, Latitude, Outlook and Bestival were each and everyone a triumph bringing yet more believers into the fold
One way and another 2010 was quite a year for Submotion Orchestra.
2011 promises even more. There's a full scale tour in March, a queue of festival promoters already vying to secure their services together with a brand new single and the first album about to drop via the newly agreed deal with exceptional. It's already looking like it's going to be another most excellent year for Submotion Orchestra
