Welcome to the longest trail in Texas! The 96 mile Lone Star Hiking Trail is located in the beautiful Sam Houston National Forest about one hour North of Houston, TX outside of the small town of Richards,TX..
Join me as I hike the trail on 3 different weekends at different times of the year. I do the first 4 sections in the month of May, I continue down the trail for the next 4 sections in July and finally complete the trail in the month of September.
This trail is incredibly diverse as it winds through open pine forests and transitions into dense almost swamp like terrain in other areas. The trail has boardwalks through the low lying areas which are really cool.
I must admit I never expected to find such beauty on a trail in Southeast Texas so I was pleasantly surprised. The trail is pretty flat as you would expect , so it's not an uphill challenge like being in a mountainous region would be.
The trail is broken up into several sections, however the guidebook and the online maps differ in mileage and also differ on the names of the sections. For the purpose of this video I will be using the mileage and sections listed on the Lone Star Hiking Trail Club website. I did carry the guidebook with me on the entire trail and found it to be a great addition to the printed maps from the website.
The Lone Star Hiking Trail is hands down the easiest trail to follow, the markers and signs are just unbelievable and it's nearly impossible to get off trail. The Lone Star Hiking Trail Club has done an outstanding job on making this such an easy trail to follow in my opinion.
