Reframing Photography: Thaumatropes and Flipbooks
The thaumatrope or "wonder turner" is considered to be the first form of animation. The optical device consists of two images, one on each side of the card. By rotating the card, the viewer superimposes the two images into a single picture.
A flipbook is a small book consisting of a series of images that give the illusion of continuous movement when the edges of the pages are flipped quickly.
You can learn how to make a photographic thaumatrope and a flipbook in the book Reframing Photography by Rebekah Modrak; information is at http://www.reframingphotography.com
