Recording tip of the day brought to you by Off The Wall Studio: When working on a snare drum in a mix and you're not happy with the way it was tuned or played (IE not enough pop). Try using an analog style compressor with an attack slow enough to allow the initial hit on the skin to come through the compressor but quick enough to grab on the the resonating ping of the drum. Giving the snare more "punch" and "fatter" in the mix. Using the compressor in this style can actually recreate the way it was played to make the drummer sound like they performed it better. Then try using an analog style EQ (I like Blue Tubes for this) and boost the top end frequencies around 8k. Try tweaking the settings the way you like. Enjoy!

Recording tip of the day brought to you by Off The Wall Studio: Using compressors can bring up the low passages and bring down peak levels. It also can colorize the audio by adding its character into it. This can be wanted or unwanted depending on the application. If you are looking for a very smooth, clear, transparent compressor try not using a compressor lol. Try using a waves Ultramaximizer+ on the "Track Slammer" preset. Using this, tweak the settings that the threshold is about -18 db and the Output Ceiling is around -9db driving the Attenuation meter to be pushed down "limited" about --6db peak and RMS around -1/-3 db. Make sure to set the release time about 50 Miller seconds thus having a real transparent very leveled audio signal. This technique is great on vocals!
