Letterman treated Thompson with more respect than he deserved. If you had seen Thompson on Letterman on previous shows you'd understand what I mean. Thompson would appear on the show and say nothing remotely intelligent. At the time I wasn't familiar with Thompson and just thought he was some braindead yokel. I later read a couple of his books and realized he had had some gray matter at one point in his life. But as an interviewee he ranks as one of the worst ever. I saw him on Charlie Rose not too long before he took his life and he was as incoherent as ever. He was naive and unrealistic (in his expectations of others) up until the day he died.
