Following two fine opening releases, Lydian Label return with their third offering, NRV. It is a second release from the ever-intriguing talent Laszlo and the third track to be heard from his up and coming album, planned for release early 2011. Inspired by images and experiences of the city of London at night, NRV is a more minimal, groove-driven track - but the signature memorable hooks and well thought out compositional ideas are ever-present. The track is full of satisfying contrasts; a deep underlying bass line breaks seamlessly into colourful jazz chords, and acoustic instruments and vocals are mixed in with ambient electronics and synthesized textures. Aside from Laszlo's obvious influence from contemporary jazz and electronica, as the track develops you can hear an apparent influence from West African music. The main cited influence for this is Bassekou Kouyate, whose modal style of rhythmical playing is converted into the mandolin for NRV and furthermore the acapella vocals combined with clapping, are also reminiscent of African styles. Laszlo appears on vocals - once again demonstrating his talents as a multi-instrumentalist - alongside fellow musicians Andrew King and Jayme Tovey. As always, everything you hear was created from scratch, with no cut and splice record samples. NRV involves more use of "found sounds", such as the shaking of his neighbour's jangling jewelery on the intro. There is a warmth to the track throughout, underpinned by a classic 808 kick, rolling along smoothly beneath the bass and harmonies. To summarise: More quality from the talented Laszlo and with so much to come on the horizon, the future is intriguing! Lydian Label have had recent reviews and plays on; BBC Radio 3, BBC Radio 6, Studio Brussels, Fritz Fm, Czech Radio 1, Byte FM, BLN.FM, DE:Bug, Pig Mag and many, many more.
