Mike + Ruthy have been touring and recording together for thirteen years. A timeless original folk and blues duo from Woodstock, NY, their fan-funded CD "Million to One" rose to the top 20 on the Americana charts in 2010. On April 17th, 2012 they are excited to introduce THE NYC EP a collection of six compelling new songs which includes their newly re-crafted Woody Guthrie ballad "My New York City." Mike + Ruthy concerts celebrate the soul of Americana through witty, spellbinding stories and songs featuring fiddle, banjo, guitar, ukulele and their hallmark, white-knuckle-tight harmony singing. April 15, 2012 they are joined by Jacob Silver at The Front Hall in the suburbs of Philadelphia, PA.
FOLK ROOTS DUO MIKE + RUTHY RELEASE NEW WOODY GUTHRIE SONG ON THE NYC EP - for release Feb 6, 2012
The adventure began with a magical document from the Guthrie Archive. We fooled around with the melody and quickly found a deep connection to "My New York City." It was obvious that we had to travel down-state to record with the boys [Jacob Silver and Robin MacMillan]. The 1-inch tape rolled and the songs flowed free and wide like the mighty Hudson. And then, like the tidal river, things seemed to eddy and flow back upstream for a minute. Was this a two-song vinyl release or the beginnings of a full record? The answer came over late night beers with some long-time road cohorts. The NYC EP is a moment in time and space, a spirited session in Williamsburg, Brooklyn with wrinkles and rough edges intact.

John Doyle with Duncan Wickel at The Front Hall 11-13-2011
Buy John's new CD, Shadow and Light, here: http://compassrecords.com/album.php?id=933
Another great evening of music at The Front Hall! John playing some tunes and songs with Duncan Wickel just after the release of his second solo album, Shadow and Light.
From John's website: "John Doyle is one of the most influential and important musicians in Irish music today. He was a founding member of Irish American supergroup Solas in the 1990s and recently served as band leader for the Joan Baez band. As a guitarist, he is unparalleled for his harmonic and rhythmic genius. His instrumental prowess contributed to his 2010 GRAMMY nomination for Best Traditional World Music album for his collaboration with fiddler Liz Carroll on Double Play. In recent years Doyle has emerged as an important singer of Irish music as well; his 2010 collaboration, Exiles Return, with Karan Casey won him critical acclaim and solidified his reputation as a world class interpreter of traditional songs.
On Shadow and Light, his second solo effort and the follow up to Wayward Son (2005), Doyle establishes himself as a masterful composer as well. 10 of the album's 11 tracks were all written by Doyle and include an engaging and mesmerizing combination of songs and tunes. Notable tracks include the Civil War inspired "Clear the Way", which tells the story of the Irish Americans who served, "Liberty's Sweet Shore" about Irish immigration to the US, and the blockbuster set of tunes entitled "Donald Ward's" which features an otherworldly performance from guest fiddler Stuart Duncan. Through it all, Doyle's tenor vocals and driving guitar playing are front and center, establishing him as a multi-faceted talent in Irish music with a album that is destined to become a classic in the genre."

Jordan Tice Trio
About The Jordan Tice Trio ...
It begins with Jordan Tice, because he wrote the music, and hatched the plan, years ago. Jordan is one of those people for whom the ideas never stop flowing, and who seems to be animated entirely by this flood of mysterious convictions. You can see them moving his limbs, pulling him this way and that, causing his hair to curl, and spilling out through his fingers, the intentions and plans mapping themselves on the fretboard of his guitar. Jordan's plan, the one of which I speak, required specific musical (and other) qualities: thunderous lows, crystalline highs, percussive attacks, voluminous whomps, steady murmurs, driving rhythms, deft dynamics, a constant supply of sarcasm and the ability to bake a mean batch of muffins. So, naturally, he called on his good friends Paul Kowert and Simon Chrisman, who with double bass and hammer dulcimer round out the Jordan Tice Trio. Like all bands, they wanted to sound like one thing, not three. And while they had a head start on this, having known each other, and played together in different configurations, for years, they were excited to get a chance to focus on the trio... sounds rich and rambunctious, lyric and far reaching, headlong and heedful, these all had to be combined. Hours and days of rehearsal time, prized from unyielding calendars and made possible by tireless travel, brought them together in a new way.
And so it was that Jordan, Paul and Simon became a band. But where did they come from, and what else do they do with themselves? Ah. All three have been in the business of making sounds, plucking strings with picks, hitting them with sticks, and also throwing bows and fingers into the mix, for quite some time. Paul graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music in 2009, relocated to New York, and has been touring with that five headed hydra of harmony, Punch Brothers (featuring Chris Thile), ever since. You can find his work on the records of artists such as Dierks Bentley, Fiona Apple and Sarah Jarosz. Jordan discovered the guitar at the age of 12, and music has been taking him all over the world ever since then, from Australia to Bulgaria, and to recording sessions and gigs with Mark Shatz, Darol Anger and Frank Wakefield. He now lives in Boston, where he plays, teaches, and writes music, working with groups as varied as the Footworks Percussive Dance Ensemble and Lily Henley's world music band. Simon tours with The Bee Eaters and the Jeremy Kittel Band, has been said to have an unusual, rhythmic style on the hammer dulcimer, and has shared the stage with the likes of Darol Anger and Mike Marshall. Originally hailing from the northwest, he followed his Bee Eater bandmates to Boston four years ago, in his quest to further that strange style and immerse himself in music.

The Gathering
THE GATHERING: A WINTER'S TALE IN SIX SONGS
"The Gathering" started out as an idea for a group of songs about a journey home on a winter's night; it became collaboration between a symphony, a songwriter and a string band. That group of traditional musicians then gathered in a cabin in the August woods to make a December record.
"THE GATHERING: A WINTER'S TALE IN SIX SONGS" was commissioned by the North Carolina Symphony and premiered with songwriter Laurelyn Dossett, Rhiannon Giddens, Mike Compton, Joe Newberry, and the Concert Singers of Cary on November 25 & 26, 2011.

Mike and Ruthy at The Front Hall 073110
Mike + Ruthy met in NYC, just out of college. Daughter to Hudson Valley fiddling legend Jay Ungar and folk-singer Lyn Hardy, Ruthy's was a past steeped in the folk tradition. Mike had his musical roots planted in the ska-punk and rock scene blasting from the college radio station in his hometown of Durham, NH. The two fell in love and went on to form the folk-rock behemoth The Mammals, which toured the world many times over. Now married and settled just outside Woodstock, NY, they tour with a full band or as a duo and sometimes share the stage with their fiddling two-year-old son, Will. Previous albums by Mike + Ruthy include the critically acclaimed debut The Honeymoon Agenda and its follow-up, Waltz of the Chickadee.

The Grey Eagles at The Front Hall April 17, 2010. 2 Sets, a total of 22 songs.
THE GREY EAGLES
Old friends who make some great old-time music, the Grey Eagles are three of the best-known players on the traditional music scene - Rafe Stefanini, Jim Collier, and Joe Newberry. When they get together they play wicked tunes, plus songs of Saturday night and Sunday morning.
Rafe Stefanini was born in Italy, and has lived in the U.S. since 1983. His love for music brought him here first as a visitor in the late 70s, then as a permanent resident. Since then he has established himself as one of the foremost interpreters of fiddle music from the South. Rafe's dynamic and elegant fiddle and banjo playing has been featured in bands including the Wildcats, Big Hoedown, and the Rockinghams.
Jim Collier has been playing old-time and bluegrass music since high school days in Raleigh, N.C. Influenced early on by time spent with Appalachian masters such as Roscoe Holcomb, Arnold Watson, and Gaither Carlton, he carries a rich tradition of tunes and songs, ranging from hard driving to sensitive and mournful. Jim is a superb singer, fiddler, banjo player, guitarist, and mandolin player.
Joe Newberry is a Missouri native and North Carolina transplant who has played music most of his life. His powerful and innovative banjo playing has won contests around the country, including first-place at the Appalachian String Band Music Festival. Also well known as a guitarist, fiddler, and singer, Joe does solo and studio work, and teaches and performs at festivals at home and abroad. Along with Jim, he is also a member of the renowned band Big Medicine.

Old Sledge at The Front Hall April 8, 2011
Old Sledge old time string band at The Front Hall Friday night April 8, 2011.
Old Sledge is a group of young musicians from the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Blowing the dust off old tunes and songs from the golden era of early country, hillbilly and blues music, Old Sledge represents the best and brightest of the new generation of traditional musicians from the south. Far from being re-enactors of old time music they bring creative arrangements and dynamic performances while still holding true to the mountain aesthetic in which they are rooted.
The band has a powerful combination of excellent singing and instrumentals. Their repertoire spans the gamut of old time country and blues music, moving from virtuosic fiddle tunes to Appalachian murder ballads to greasy blues. The band is quickly gaining notoriety, not only as a great performance ensemble, but also as a torchbearer of traditional music.
Members of the band have sought out and mentored with the old masters of traditional music, soaking up not only the tunes but also the authentic style and spirit of old time music. Collectively, the band has won numerous awards for their music including the West Virginia Fiddle and Banjo championships, as well as 1st place at The Appalachian String Band Festival (Clifftop, WV). Members have performed in such prestigious venues such as The Kennedy Center, The Barbican, Carnegie Hall, and starred in the BBC television production "Folk America".
Old Sledge performs in a variety of settings including festivals, concerts and dances. They also lead workshops in traditional Appalachian singing and playing and have been faculty at the Augusta Heritage Center, Pinewoods Dance Camp, Allegheny Echoes, Cowan Creek and Champlain Valley Folk Festival.
Chance McCoy - fiddle, banjo, guitar vocals
As a native of West Virginia, Chance has steeped himself in the songs and tunes of the mountains he grew up in, emerging from the youngest generation of old time players as a masterful steward of the tradition. His fiddling and banjo playing has won him blue ribbons at contests throughout the southern mountains, including the West Virginia State Fiddle and Banjo contest, and the Appalachian Stringband Music Festival (Clifftop).
Sabra Guzmán - guitar, banjo ukulele, upright bass, vocals
Being defined as "the Gypsy", Sabra has traveled far and wide, coast to coast, continent to continent, soaking up people, their stories, and experiences that she's felt a close connection to. Over the past few years, she's found herself settling into the mountains of southwest Virginia, honing her skills on guitar and upright bass. Falling in love with the Carter Family, old field-recordings from the South, and early country music singers, she's become inspired to travel and play this music full-time.
