The most impressive up-and-coming Finnish metal drummer of today, Heikki Malmberg is revered for his soulful expression, limb independence, power, stamina, and ruthless practice regimen. He has played the drums since the age of thirteen all the while honing his own individual style to perfection.
In addition to recording and performing, Malmberg has given private drum lessons since 1996. Apart from playing the drums, he composes his own music and plays the guitar.
Malmberg was born in 1981 in Tampere, Finland, where he still resides. Although well versed in various aspects of percussion, he is most inspired by Terry Bozzio, Tomas Haake, Mike Mangini, and Marco Minnemann.
The man's current main project is the metal group Diablo, which was founded in the mid-1990's. Malmberg joined the team in 2000 and appears on the sophomore effort 'Renaissance' (2002), 'Eternium' (2004) and the most current release 'Mimic 47' (2006). Diablo's recorded output as well as the band's fiery live shows have been critically acclaimed from day one.
Concurrently with the release of 'Eternium', Malmberg was featured in the leading Finnish rock magazine Soundi (issue 1/2004) in a profile series that concentrates on interesting instrumentalists. In the past, this article series has highlighted talent such as Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Robert Trujillo from Metallica, and Mike Portnoy from Dream Theater. In the same magazine, he finished at 14th place in the annual readers' poll category "Musician of the Year 2004" (issue 1/2005).
Malmberg also plays in a pop-rock group Manzana and provides solid backbeats for Dame.
