Our German friends from Himmighausen visited over the weekend of 29th July 2011. Their band played wonderfully and all our band were very impressed. We all went to Whitby for fish and chips on Saturday morning. Fish and chips seemed OK for them, but mushy peas received a less enthusiastic welcome. After a dash back to Kirkby, we set off for Helmsley to share the stage at a concert for the prestigious Ryedale Festival at Duncombe House. That night at the Memorial Hall, Kirkby we were all treated to a session from Kirkby's own Soul Band. After the first sober up, football at the football field on Sunday morning was just the way to start the day. Kirkby showed their generosity by letting Himmighausen thrash them, in true England - Germany tradition. A march round the town in the afternoon finished at the band room, where the Kirkby Junior Band gave a confident and enjoyable performance. Time for a quick nap, before the concert from both bands at the Memorial Hall. Wonderful gifts were exchanged and a pledge to get together in the future was expressed. A tearful goodbye on Monday morning left us with a feeling that in spite of a lot of hard work from both Himmighausen and Kirkby, the weekend had been a great success and it was especially cheering to see the young members of both bands have such a great time. The older members will take longer to get over it, but enjoyed it just as much. Thank's to all the people who gave their free time in both Himmighausen and Kirkby to make the weekend so enjoyable.
