Od pijaca koje danas postoje u Novom sadu najranije se pominje Riblja pijaca, koja se na današnjoj lokaciji nalazi od sredine XIX veka. Centralna gradska pijaca za prodaju poljoprivrednih proizvoda nalazila se u drugoj polovini XIX veka na mestu današnjeg Trga slobode i duž Zmaj Jovine ulice. Narastanjem ponude i potražnje, ovaj prostor postaje tesan, pa se ova pijaca pocetkom XX veka seli na lokaciju današnje Futoške pijace oko 1906. godine i prostor koji zauzima današnja Temerinska pijaca u godinama nakon I svetskog rata.

Ubrzanim razvojem Novog Sada od druge polovine XIX veka i njegovim prerastanjem u administrativni, privredni i kulturni centar današnje AP Vojvodine, narastala je i potreba za sve organizovanijim snabdevanjem stanovništva prehrambenim poljoprivrednim proizvodima. Tako je 25.juna 1952. godine osnovana Gradska komunalna ustanova "Tržnica", nastala spajanjem tadašnje tri postojece pijacne uprave.

Današnje Javno komunalno preduzece "Tržnica" organizovano je odlukom Skupštine grada Novog Sada 19.maja 1994. godine, cime mu je povereno na upravljanje osam pijaca na teritoriji grada Novog Sada. To su Limanska, Riblja, Futoška. Temerinska, Najlon, Kvantaška, Satelitska i Detelinarska pijaca.
